What is a payment gateway?
Solution
Traditionally, the majority of transactions were (and still are) processed over traditional (POTS) lines. With the advent of internet and wireless technologies, "gateway" companies have sprung up to provide a convenient interface for POS devices to process using these connection methods. Most simply put, a payment gateway allows credit cards to be processed over an ip or wireless network - as is the case with ecommerce websites and wireless credit card machines.
